Andy Griffith Show, The- Theme Song
One of the most endearing and enduring television comedies of all time, "The
Andy Griffith Show" began in 1960. The show was, at it's heart, the story of
widower Sheriff Andy Taylor (Griffith) trying to raise his son Opie (Ron
Howard), with the assistance of Aunt Bee (Francis Bavier). Andy's gentle
demeanor helped him solve the problems faced by the townsfolk and tolerate
their eccentricities. Deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts) was Andy's high-strung
gung-ho partner against crime. However, the little town of Mayberry had very
little crime and Andy didn't even carry a gun. Some of the memorable
Mayberry denizens featured over the years include naive mechanic Gomer Pyle
(Jim Nabors), lovelorn barber Floyd Lawson (Howard McNear), loveable town
drunk Otis Campbell (Hal Smith), and Barney's long-suffering girlfriend
Thelma (Betty Lynn).
The series was more than
the sum of it's folksy characters however, Mayberry has become an American
ideal. A little town in North Carolina that audiences visited and, in many
ways, never left. The slow pace of life and the humanity of it's residents
has instilled many with a longing for simpler times.
Spin-offs from this show
include "Gomer Pyle USMC." and "Mayberry RFD". A reunion show
"Return to Mayberry" was the top rated movie of the entire 1985-86
television season and the show continues in reruns to charm new generations. |

Lyric:
The Andy
Griffith Show ("The Fishin' Hole" by Everett
Sloane, Earle Hagen and Herbert Spencer)
- Well, now, take down your fishin' pole
and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
- We may not get a bite all day, but
don't you rush away.
-
- What a great place to rest your bones
and mighty fine for skippin' stones,
- You'll feel fresh as a lemonade, a-settin'
in the shade.
-
- Whether it's hot, whether it's cool,
oh what a spot for whistlin' like a fool.
-
- What a fine day to take a stroll and
wander by The Fishin' Hole,
- I can't think of a better way to pass
the time o' day.
-
- We'll have no need to call the roll
when we get to The Fishin' Hole,
- There'll be you, me, and Old Dog Trey,
to doodle time away.
-
- If we don't hook a perch or bass,
we'll cool our toes in dewy grass,
- Or else pull up a weed to chaw, and
maybe set and jaw.
-
- Hangin' around, takin' our ease,
watchin' that hound a-scratchin' at his fleas.
-
- Come on, take down your fishin' pole
and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
- I can't think of a better way to pass
the time o' day.
