Newhart- Theme Song
The CBS series "Newhart" marked the return of Bob
Newhart, to network television four years after the end of the highly
successful "Bob Newhart Show". This long-running series was indeed a worthy
successor, running for eight years. Newhart portrays Dick Loudon, a "how-to"
book writer and owner of a bed & breakfast, the Stratford Inn, in scenic
rural Vermont. With wife Joanna (Mary Frann), they arrive full of
anticipation but the down-to-earth folks they expect to find are more
eccentric than expected. Introduced early in the series were handyman George
Utley (Tom Poston) and habitual liar and nearby cafe owner Kirk (Steven
Kampmann). Memorable characters Larry (William Sanderson), Darryl (Tony
Papenfuss) and his other brother Darryl (John Voldstad) were bewildering to
Dick, and nearly everyone else. Michael (Peter Scolari) and Stephanie (Julia
Duffy) were preppy and superficial, eventually married and had a child.
The series remained popular from 1982 though 1990 but may be best remembered
for one of the best series finales in television history. At the end of the
final episode, Dick is knocked unconscious by an errant golf ball, wakes up
in bed with Emily (Suzanne Pleshette) from "The Bob Newhart Show", and
proceeds to tell her about his bizarre dream of being an innkeeper in rural
Vermont. |
