Sanford and Son

Sanford and Son- Theme Song
Based on the British comedy "Steptoe and Son", Norman
Lear scored a huge hit with the Redd Foxx sitcom "Sanford and Son". Fred
Sanford (Foxx) was an elderly junk yard owner and widower, whose son Lamont
(Demond Wilson) still lived at home and helped him run the place. Fred was
grumpy and a bit cantankerous, but was really scared his son, who had
greater ambitions than junkyard ownership, would eventually move out. Each
time Lamont mentioned leaving the old man, Fred would clutch his chest and
exclaim, "I'm comin' Elizabeth!". A reference to his deceased wife. Fred
somehow exuded enough charm to keep a girlfriend, nurse Donna Harris (Lynn
Hamilton). Another memorable supporting cast member was Aunt Esther (LaWanda
Page), who was a constant, somewhat self-righteous, annoyance to Fred. Foxx
left the series for his own failed variety series and remaining star Demond
Wilson left in a salary dispute. A follow-up Foxx-less series, "The Sanford
Arms", starring LaWanda Page, lasted only two months. A third series
"Sanford", this time starring Foxx aired in 1980, but poor scheduling and a
lack of viewers led to a quick demise. |
