First Kermit the Frog Going to the Smithsonian
08/25/10
The original Kermit the Frog from Jim Henson's Muppets collection is coming home to Washington where the characters were created in the 1950s. On Wednesday, Henson's widow Jane Henson will donate 10 characters from the early TV show "Sam and Friends" to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The museum already has a familiar Kermit the Frog puppet made famous on "Sesame Street" and "The Muppet Show." But the original Kermit looked more like a lizard. He was made with ping pong ball eyes and green felt from an old coat thrown out by Henson's mother. Other early Muppets being donated to the museum include the precursors to Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch, as well as Sam from "Sam and Friends" who would lip-sync to popular music.

'Howdy Doody Show' Writer Edward Kean Dies at 85
08/23/10
A family friend says "Howdy Doody Show" writer Edward Kean has died at the age of 85. Kean was the primary writer for the show and penned the theme song to which millions of American children sang along each week during the show's run on NBC from 1947 to 1960. Family friend Del Reddy said Monday that Kean died Aug. 13 at a nursing care facility in Oakland County's West Bloomfield Township from complications of emphysema. Reddy says the New York City native wrote the song "It's Howdy Doody Time," which was sung during the show's opening. Kean is credited with creating the exclamation, "kowabunga," made popular by one of the show's characters and borrowed by Bart Simpson, the animated problem child on the long-running comedy "The Simpsons."

'Kids in the Hall' Reunion Miniseries
08/20/10
The last time The Kids in the Hall performed for the cameras was their 1996 feature, "Brain Candy." Before that, this supremely funny Canadian-born quintet starred in their sketch-comedy series on HBO and CBS. Though the members have dispersed to pursue individual projects, they returned for more Kid stuff in the form of live comedy tours, most recently in 2008. Now they're back on TV screens in "The Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town," a four-hour miniseries on IFC. The first pair of half-hour episodes airs Friday (10 p.m. EDT). All five "Kids" — Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson — star in this twisted murder mystery, tackling all the major roles (male and, in masterful drag, female, too).

Michael Douglas' Cancer Diagnosis
08/16/10
Michael Douglas has been diagnosed with a tumor in his throat, his representative said Monday. Douglas, 65, will begin eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy treatment, Allen Burry said. His doctors expect the actor to make a full recovery, he said.

"M.A.S.H." Eatery in Dispute
08/13/10
A family feud is simmering over an Ohio restaurant whose hot dogs were made famous by the 1970s television series "M.A.S.H." .A co-owner of Tony Packo's says the company owes $2.7 million after defaulting on two loans. But an attorney for Tony Packo Jr. and his son says the company is negotiating its debt and its restaurants will be in business for many years. The claims are being made in court as part of a lawsuit over financial records and spending. It's the second time in eight years feuding in the family-owned business has gone public. Tony Packo's Inc. operates restaurants in the Toledo area and sells hot dogs and condiments nationwide. The hot dogs were mentioned on "M.A.S.H" by the Cpl. Max Klinger character, played by Toledo native Jamie Farr.
