'As the World Turns' Matriarch Wagner Dies at 91
05/03/10
Actress Helen Wagner, who played mild-mannered Nancy Hughes on the CBS soap opera "As the World Turns" for more than a half-century and spoke its first words, has died at age 91. She died Saturday. Wagner opened "As the World Turns" when it premiered on April 2, 1956, with the words: "Good morning, dear." She held the Guinness World Record for playing the same role on television for the longest amount of time. In 2002 Wagner received a plaque on the Buddy Holly Walk of Fame in her hometown and in 2004 she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

'Andy Griffith Show' Actress Robbed in 'Mayberry'
04/29/10
The actress who played Thelma Lou on "The Andy Griffith Show" was robbed in the town that inspired the show's idyllic Mayberry setting, after moving to the area to avoid big city crime. Betty Lou Lynn had her wallet stolen at a shopping center in Mount Airy, the birthplace of Andy Griffith. The Mount Airy News reports that police arrested Shirley Walter Guynn of Cana, Va. He's being held in Surry County Jail on a $10,000 bond. It was not immediately clear Thursday if he has a lawyer. In an earlier interview with the newspaper, the 83-year-old Lynn said she moved to Mount Airy after being robbed three times in Los Angeles. In the TV series, Thelma Lou was the girlfriend of Deputy Barney Fife, played by Don Knotts.

Authorities Jail, Release Randy Quaid and Wife
04/27/10
Randy and Evi Quaid were briefly jailed Monday after showing up to court two weeks late for a criminal case. The actor and his wife were released after posting $100,000 bail each and were told to return for a court hearing on Wednesday, the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department said in a news release. The couple have repeatedly failed to show up for hearings in a felony case alleging they defrauded an inn out of more than $10,000. They also have been charged with burglary and conspiracy and have pleaded not guilty. Their attorney, Robert Sanger, has said the money has been repaid and the Quaids hope to resolve the case without a trial. Sanger on Monday declined to comment on the case or say why the couple didn't appear as scheduled earlier this month. A judge ordered the couple's $40,000 bail forfeited after they missed a hearing on April 12. Arrest warrants were issued after the Quaids failed to show up the following day as well. The case has been ongoing since September. A criminal complaint alleges the couple used an invalid credit card to defraud the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito of more than $10,000.

Actor Randy Quaid and Wife Arrested
04/27/10
Randy and Evi Quaid showed up in a criminal courtroom two weeks late Monday and were arrested on outstanding warrants. The actor and his wife were ordered held on $100,000 bail and told to return for a court hearing Wednesday. The couple have repeatedly failed to show up in a Santa Barbara court for hearings in a felony case alleging that they defrauded an inn out of more than $10,000. They have pleaded not guilty, and their attorney has said the money has been repaid and the Quaids hope to resolve the case. But the couple's repeated missed appearances cost them $40,000 in bail that they forfeited after missing an April 12 hearing. Warrants for the Quaids' arrest were issued after they didn't show up the following day, either. The Quaids' attorney, Robert Sanger, did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment. Randy Quaid is best-known for supporting roles in films such as "Independence Day" and "National Lampoon's Vacation." He is the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid.

‘South Park’ Producers Say Network Cut Speech
04/23/10
Producers of "South Park" said Thursday that Comedy Central removed a speech about intimidation and fear from their show after a radical Muslim group warned that they could be killed for insulting the Prophet Muhammad. It came during about 35 seconds of dialogue between the cartoon characters of Kyle, Jesus Christ and Santa Claus that was bleeped out. "It wasn't some meta-joke on our part," producers Trey Parker and Matt Stone said. Comedy Central declined to comment. Earlier this week, the radical group Revolution Muslim said on its website that "South Park" had insulted their prophet during last week's episode by depicting him in a bear costume. The group said it wasn't threatening Parker and Stone, but it included a gruesome picture of Theo Van Gogh, a Dutch filmmaker killed by a Muslim extremist in 2004, and said the producers could meet the same fate. The website posted the addresses of Comedy Central's New York office and the California production studio where "South Park" is made. Parker and Stone said that in 14 years of making "South Park," which just had its 200th episode, they've never delivered one they couldn't stand behind.
